It seems believers will go to almost any length to keep their fantasies intact. Now ‘El Morya’ has a myspace profile, complete with a boatload of Nicholas Roerich paintings. (Roerich was an artist and set designer who along with his wife was the founder of the Agni Yoga society, and also claimed to have seen a UFO in 1926). Morya’s profile currently boasts 230 people willing to count him among their imaginary friends. ‘El Morya’ is 99 years old, single (!) an Aquarius, and declined to answer about his sexual preference. The ‘single’ part must be a reference to the early ’90s ‘dictation’ that his ‘twin flame,’ who had reportedly been a prostitute on the streets of New York City (not kidding, I couldn’t make this stuff up if I wanted to!) must not have made it. She must not have repented and ‘turned to the light’ during her alotted 10 years. So ‘Morya’ has apparently gotten a spiritual divorce, and is cruising for new twin flames. Such drama!
From the looks of it, there are more than enough willing female sycophants on myspace to tickle Morya’s fancy for quite some time. This might appear at first glance to be harmless fun. But there’s an element of wacko fraud and delusion that permeates the whole enterprise.
‘Morya‘ is a creation and puppet of a long line of human charlatans, starting with Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, a 19th-century spiritualist and medium who first claimed his existence. Along with Henry Steele Olcott and others, Blavatsky founded the Theosophical Society in 1875. Dabbling in Buddhism and other forms of Eastern mysticism, the organization eventually dissolved into infighting with the leaders accusing one another of taking fraudulent dictations from the ‘master.’ But of course! When everyone is doing the same thing (getting imaginary messages from an imaginary person), it’s only the force of persuasion and personality that keeps the followers from defecting. Power and money follow the messengership, so there will always be new pretenders vying to be the center of attention.
Rather than seeing this bickering as evidence of the spurious nature of the messages, believers followed new spokesmen who sprang up to carry the torch, in an unbroken chain which was extended throughout the 20th century and included Guy and Edna Ballard, Geraldine Innocenti, my parents, the founders of the Summit Lighthouse, and many others. My father claimed to have had a vision of Morya–twice–and began to take his dictations in 1958. But even he had to fight off challengers. His own assistant, Francis Ekey, used to edit and change his messages. Before he was able to cement his control over the newly formed Summit Lighthouse, he had to defeat Ekey and convince his donors that he was the rightful heir to the title of messenger. Plus ca change…The more things change, the more they stay the same. Today, at least a half-dozen new fraudsters claim messengership for the fictional character of ‘El Morya.’
Now on to the loser who set up ‘Morya’s’ myspace profile. In a way, he or she is also claiming to speak for ‘Morya.’ If you’re going to set up a shrine site, at least have the decency to call it what it is. For example, check out the Captain Kirk action figure site. (Funny song by William Shatner there). At least that person does it with a sense of humor. El Morya’s no more real than Captain Kirk, yet his friends and the perpetrator of the profile are deadly earnest about it. The site music is “Pomp and Circumstance,” which is supposed to represent ‘El Morya’s’ noble nature in some twisted way. The whole thing has an air of groveling reverence about it that is downright creepy. They might as well be worshiping Gandalf. I half expect to find out someday that someone is claiming Gandalf as an ascended master. Hey, the production design in the Lord of the Rings series is leagues ahead of Roerich’s simple impressionism anyway! But the legend of El Morya is no less of a yarn than Tolkien’s series, and his ‘master’ status is no less absurd.
Morya’s friends are every bit as serious about him as Muslims are about Allah, Christians about Jesus, or Scientologists about Xenu (I guess Xenu is the bad guy, but ‘god’ and the ‘devil’ are two sides of the same coin). Part of me is shocked that people actually still fall for this late 19th century spiritualist carnival scam. It’s as if they’re listening to a ventriloquist’s dummy with no ventriloquist in sight! And the dummy has convinced everyone there’s actually a ventriloquist and he can hold forth on matters of great significance on which they end up basing their lives. Only the most lost, desperate, and insecure would find themselves so far adrift from reality. My parents were instrumental in maintaining and legitimizing this collective delusion and taking advantage of these vulnerable disciples. To the extent that I participated as a minister and church representative, I feel responsible as well.
Here’s sending out a lifeboat to all you El Morya worshipers. I feel your pain, I’ve been where you are, and I’m here to help. It’s never too late to wake up and join the community of reason.

Hey Sean
Lol…El Morya on myspace, it does not surprise me, I just hope people from myspace realised it is just for fun…….I don’t remember if I told you this Sean, but I am still working in a new age bookstore, I’m an undercover atheist….lol, its sometime difficult with the other employees ( I’m the closed minded, close hearted analytic co-worker) but it gives me so much inspiration to be there. Everyday, I talk with one of my co-worker, she channels dolphins and whales, is that great or what ?……lol……. Next year I will probably have to leave that crazy place since my publishing house is coming along ok. I don’t know where I will take my inspiration….maybe the profile of El Morya on myspace….lol
I don’t want to freak you out, but I think that this new age thing is just the beginning.
There is a publishing house in Montreal, Lumiere d’El Morya (The light from El Morya) and they are the one’s who have the legal rights of your parents books. They get a new book out every three months, and it’s selling good, particularly the small ones. I think El Morya is here to stay, I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think so. Here in Quebec, general bookstores who use to have 100 – 300 titles of new age, since 5 – 7 years they have more than 2000 titles of new age books plus more tv shows and more magazines. Pretty scary.
I’m glad you talk about the fact that your Father’s book where edited and changed by this Ekey guy. It makes me think about Abd Allah, one of the scribs of Muhammad. Abd Allah realised that some messages was wrongly said when coming out of the ‘’prophet’’ mouth. When he ask Muhammad to change them, he said ‘’ok’’. Ok ? …….So Adb Allah decided to leave Islam because of this and Muhammad wanted to kill him because of his defection. (Ibn Warraq)
On another subject ; thanks for the Dawkins videos, it was fantastic to watch. He’s doing a fantastic job, I hope to do the same here in Québec.
Thanx for your website and your reflections on these subjects, keep it up.
Marc
You may find that most of those claiming him as their imaginary friend are also imaginary friends, just the creations of internet marketiing, (if thepreponderance of imaginary people in the people claiming to be fans of WhydontYou on Technorati) are anything to go by.
Isn’t the internet great when even imaginary friends can have their own imaginary friends?
Hi Marc, thanks for your comment, I don’t have any illusions that people will give up the “new age” ways of thinking. But as you know, that doesn’t make it real. At this point, my parents writings have become part of the new age canon, and will probably continue to propagate for some time to come.
My parents fulfilled their purpose, which was to assure that their works would be copied and distributed widely. Dennett posits that in an evolutionary sense, what religions started out to be was a means of ensuring the continuity of knowledge in a time when written language did not exist. So group repetition was a way of not forgetting–and of error correction–hence the strong emphasis on mandatory participation. It was seen as a public duty to help ensure the continuity of knowledge.
Later when the written word came along, the same compulsion remained to copy the ‘scripture’ with perfect fidelity. But people didn’t realize that it was no longer needed. So then it became about finding the memes that satisfied people and kept them coming back. Then the enterprise became self-sustaining.
Perhaps new-age thinking is a bridge from traditional religion to a more expansive worldview that can later weed out the remaining elements of superstition and finally yield to reason. I’m not sure. I’d like to hope all that attention being paid to mysticism had an ultimate benefit. But maybe not. Maybe people are just spending their lives devoted to copying and transmitting whatever meme they’re exposed to.
The example of key scribes changing texts and thereby creating schisms and factions is a scary side-effect of this human tendency to promote scriptures. Every evolutionary force can be exploited by someone who sees what’s taking place and figures out how to game the system.
Heather, great point. How many of those ‘friends’ were created by the person who created the profle?
So…are you saying you do that for your blog? :-)
[…] This blog has a special fondness for El Morya since Black Sun Journal brought him to our attention. So, what great news on Black Sun Journal that he has a MySpace profile and MySpace friends! […]
There is a trend out there to build “parody” sites, that look like the real thing but are only meant to see how far you can take religious craziness before someone guesses you’re faking it. A good example is the Molly the Mormon blog. MTM is a hilarious site for those familiar with Mormonism and it also manages to attract comments from people who believe the site is the real thing.
Wow, I cannot wait to read Dennett on religion. Thanks
When you say : >
I too, want to believe that this will happen one day. Of course most of the best sellers at the bookstore is channelling, Kryeon, Ramtha and others. But there is a small portion of the customers who buy Vedanta, Zen, Rupert Sheldrake, Laszlo or Bohm. I’m not saying
that’s it’s good, but at least it’s not dolphin channelling….lol……In one direction I see new age getting more and more superstitious and > crazyness. And in the other direction we see the scientific method entering new age and forcing people to ask more and more critical questions.

(About imaginary blog friends)
No. The WhyDontYou imaginary friends were a gift from (name deity of choice)
The technorati “people who favourite this blog” list went from a modest dozen to over 80 in the course of one weekend. The instant surge of fans was impressive
When l I actually looked at some of the new-found friends, they were nearly all “internet Marketing” spam blogs and part of a “You favourite my blog and I’ll favourite yours” campaign.
Pretty pointless campaign, like most spam. It doesn’t even up your ranking or anything and it stops you clicking on any of the blogs listed, even the real ones. In any case, I can’t remember how to get into my Technorati identity so I couldn’t favourite them back if I wanted to.
It seems to have stopped and the new people on the list have become a slow trickle of humans.
Mana,
I love parody sites. They take a special brand of brilliance and often make a much stronger point than the serious ones. MTM is great.
Who gave that “dictation” in the early 1990’s? do you happen to recall where you read about it? Thanks, I never had run across such info!
Satya
Satya,
It was given by Elizabeth Clare Prophet in what the church calls “King Arthur’s Court” in Montana. I was there. The part about “Morya’s twin flame” may have been in separate remarks after the dictation. Now that I think about it I don’t recall that “Morya” spoke of his “twin flame” directly. I’d have to check the transcripts of “dictations” around that time which I no longer have access to. But given the supposed “sensitivity” of the information, it’s quite likely that it was never published. But the story was heard by hundreds of people.
I’ll be the first to admit it. I knew nothing about this…Morya character. But now that I do…I will add it to the Mormons column of misadventures, and consider its hilarity primarily when tripping on shrooms.
Ok this post isn’t such a terrible necro as my last…
Here!
sorry about that. A google search brought me to that page first ;)
Anyway, I’ve been reading for a few hours now and following the paper trail of links. I bookmarked the site.
To comment on this article:
Everyone knows facebook is where it’s at. Myspace? pfffft! Get with the times Morya 3 dots!
Overall, its been an enjoyable read. I’ll definitely be checking back.
Cheers!

LOL
“black sun” = the Thule Society secret loggia where Hitler and his friends used to practice black magic. Their leader wore green globes as a symbol of the 5th ray and carried the title of Keeper (of the Keys).
Their members were freedom fanatics–true. Their salute summarized their longings (Heil und Sieg!! =”Salvation and Victory!!”)
so… Heil und Sieg!!! :o)
Jm,
You have now violated Godwin’s Law. ;-)
Of course the Black Sun Nazi association has always been a negative connotation. But in the end, the value of a symbol cannot be diluted by whatever freaks may have misused it. Even the swastika had significance well before Hitler appropriated it for his twisted agenda.
I use the Black Sun as a symbol of personal liberation, nonconformity, and shadow integration. In that context, I’m proud to walk under the Black Sun banner.
What a shame! What a misuse of writing skills!
I am going to talk on behalf of myself and a community of the scholars of Theosophy and Agni Yoga, NOT the ones who engage in online games with someone who has M.’s name on a online profile!
I had been studying Agni Yoga (AY) for the past 15 years. Presently, I am actively engaged with a community of Agni Yoga scholars in Russia. Yes, the name of El Morya is sacred to any student of the Agni Yoga Teaching. But we don’t worship the Teacher M. or anyone else. That’s nonsese! AY is not a religion.
Now, whoever wrote the article CLEARLY has NO IDEA about the depth of Agni Yoga Teaching, the work of Roerichs and Blavatskaya their contribution to the world’s spirituality.
I was going to suggest the author to try going to Theosofic society, talking to its people, reading “The Secret Doctrine”, contemplating Nicolas Roerich’s paintings (Hymalayan series) and understand a little bit what Agni Yoga (The Live Ethics) is about.
But then I don’t know if this will help. An article is written without a heart or any love, a pure product of a cold intellect.
Love is what you need, my friend. You need to start using your heart a little bit in every aspect of life, especially work.
To be able to understand the teachings of New Age one should use both a heart and a mind TOGETHER. This is the key to understanding Agni Yoga Teaching as well.
And leave El Morya alone!
I dunno why, but that made me think of Chris Cocker and his, “Leave Britney Alone!” youtube meme.
Anyway Roman, there is nothing to be understood; it is all made up baloney.
I wish I could say the same for Britney Spears… *sigh* *shrug*
El Morya is very P O P U L A R. I bet you wish you were that popular. :—-))
I LOVE IT!
[…] CUT has discovered Facebook. Oy. I wonder if they’ll create Facebook pages for Merlin, Christopher Columbus, and George Washington as ascended masters. Kind of like El Morya’s myspace page (previous article): At a recent Sunday service at the church’s teaching center in Bozeman, about 30 of the still-faithful gathered in a room hung with portraits of Jesus, George Washington and St. Germain. A table at the front of the room displayed small statues of Buddha and the Virgin Mary. A sword and dagger lay near a replica of the Statue of Liberty. […]

Hello,
Hey BlackSun, can you write an article about Geraldine Innocenti? I desire know more about her. I read your Mother’s Book talking that she was lesbian and that she commited suicide. its true?
Eduardo,
I know very little about Geraldine, other than that she claimed to be a messenger and El Morya's “twin flame.” She died before I was born, and I never read or heard anything definitive about her except what my parents said.
1. The teaching on Geraldine Innocente was not given as hot air. The teaching was on the Bride of Christ (not Twin Flame), and it has fallen into ruin from the neglect to address the unsavory gossip to have resulted into an ungodliness: that she was a prostitute in New York City for which she did not repent during her messengership (1951-61).
As the sponsoring master, I explained in 1952 through Geraldine Innocente the purpose of the founding of The Bridge to Freedom: “The beloved Maha Chohan gave Me a limited Grant, saying that the response of the few whom I had chosen would determine whether I could continue such an association. With well justified trepidation, I endeavored to correspond with the most likely and promising of those who professed to love Us and Our Way. Their response made it possible for Me to continue this Endeavor.”
2. When I spoke about Geraldine Innnocente, I was speaking about her need to become the Bride of Christ, as this is the level of chelaship that is required to anchor the messages and take the dictations of the ascended masters (Vol. 38, No. 26). It was with “justified trepidation” as stated. For when one takes the messengership and squanders the light, it is like “the whore of Babylon” (Rev. 14:8) (New York City meaning Babylon), and then the ascended master, (and it could have been another master as its sponsor), must then look for another Bride of Christ to fulfill the purpose.
3. There were other ascended masters who came forward to try out the Bridge to Freedom to supplement the I AM movement, wherein in 1952 Saint Germain said, “It was never intended to start a 'new' Activity, but to broaden the field of service of the present Activity, by engaging the competent and willing service of lifestreams not presently allowed full expression of their talents in 'widening the borders of the Father's Kingdom.”
There became a great antagonism among the groups, and the sharp words, the strong innuendo upon her, were lies from a teaching degenerated to this day that should be consigned to the flame of purity, as she served the Brotherhood tremendously, for which we do express our profound gratitude—someone willing to take on such onslaught on her character like the stoning of Mary Magdelene for the sake of our ongoing work, and then with innocence and faith to continue to carry on until she would ascend at the end of that life.
How do you know that she was a prostitute?
I'm a Mexican female atheist and my husband is into metafisica, really????
